hot lazy days

There’s nothing like a hot day to make one seek out respite. And there is no lack of places to enjoy the heat and have a lazy day when you live in Victoria. Just a short drive from Victoria’s urban core, the Sooke Potholes offer a wonderful swimming, picnicking, cycling and hiking destination. The water is beautifully clean and clear. You can stay in the more popular area or hike a little and find your own private respite, like this one.

This small pocket of privacy on the Sooke River includes a small, sandy beach. The wading and swimming is very refreshing, and you just never know what creatures will visit. I’ve seen eagles, turkey vultures and common nighthawks soaring overhead. And one day, a young pine martin visited the water’s edge before skedaddling over my foot as it made its way back to the forest. For real.

With temperatures soaring this weekend, I thought I’d share one of favourite getaways with Gayle over the years.
